These are bite-sized tips that you can implement immediately to travel more often, while living a healthier financial life! In case you missed any, we’ve rounded up all of our tips + tricks from this fall for you to use as a quick + easy reference!
Travel Tip Tuesday
September 11th - Understand the relationship between price + value when booking. It is always better to pay a little more up front for a hotel or Airbnb to be close to where you want to be. In the long run, this will save you money on transportation and give you back valuable hours so that you can see + do even more on your vacation!
September 18th - Most airlines + travel websites have a 24 hour cancellation window. After you’ve booked your travel, make sure to check back the next day to see if your price has gone down. If it has, rebook at the lower price!
September 25th - Use the “My Maps” feature on Google Maps when planning a trip. Enter all of your locations into Google Maps for a quick + easy way to visually see what attractions are close to each other. This is a great way to group activities so you aren’t spending half your time traveling back + forth across the city. It also helps make picking a hotel or Airbnb even easier!
October 2nd - Use apps like Hopper or Skyscanner to set alerts for any trips that have non-negotiable dates and destinations, such as a friend’s wedding. Hopper notifies you the date when prices are likely to go up, so you know when you should stop waiting on a good deal. It will also send you notifications for any killer deals that pop up!
October 9th - To help you beat jet lag + spend as much time as possible enjoying the location you are traveling to, here are some great tips we follow!
Change your clock, as soon as you board, to your new time zone + try to wake up/sleep based on that time.
If possible, book flights that land in the evening, so you can go straight to sleep + wake up refreshed + ready to take on the day.
Avoid alcoholic beverages while on the flight, especially anything high in sugar.
If you need help sleeping, we recommend 10 mg of melatonin. It helps promote drowsiness and restful sleep without that groggy feeling the next day.
October 16th - Look for easy ways to earn points. For example, if you live in the Seattle area, sign up for 12status! Delta partnered with the Seattle Seahawks to give you points for every passing yard. All you have to do is enter your email! Joining also gives you priority boarding!
Finance Tip Friday
September 14th - Small actions can make a BIG difference. Try to commit to one small change, such as increasing your 401K contribution by 1% or paying an extra $20 off your student loan payment, to see big differences in the future.
September 21st - Be specific with your finance goals by using dates + numbers. Instead of saying “I want to get out of debt” say “I will pay $500 off of my credit card by November 1st.”
September 28th - Set a cash cap on your “fun.” Before heading out with your friends, figure out how much you want to spend + bring that in cash. There’s nothing worse than waking up the next day + realizing you went a little too crazy on mimosas at brunch.
October 5th - Challenge yourself to be more conscious with your spending. Whether that is doing a Cash Only month or by doing No Spend days. This helps you to think through what you are spending your money on and whether it is a want or a need. It also helps evaluate what categories you might want to cut back on.
October 12th - The best way to track your financial health is by your net worth.
Net Worth = Assets (cash, stocks, home equity, etc.) - Debts
If you have negative net worth, your first goal is to get your net worth in the positive. If your net worth is already positive (yay!), check in every 3 months to make sure that it is increasing. If it isn’t, why not? Create an action plan to change that!
October 19th - Spend freely on what you love + cut costs on the things you don’t care about. List your top 3 spending priorities. Now check your bank statement + what your top 3 non-essential expenses were from last month. Do your priorities + expenses line up? If not, think of what lifestyle changes you can make so that they do!
